Deuteronomy 21:4 – And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer’s neck there in the valley.
Thought: The taking of innocent life was a “high crime” in the sight of God. Innocent blood shed in the holy land of Canaan stained the land. God, therefore, desired cleansing. This cleansing involved the blood of an innocent victim. In this case, it was the blood of a heifer. The heifer was brought into a valley that was rough, that is, not prepared to be farmed and was killed there. The words, “strike off the heifer’s neck,” meant to break the animal’s neck.
