III.          APPLICATION TO CHURCH GROWTH

 

A.    Unity of the church is essential (Acts 2:1; See Acts 1:14)

 

B.    God fulfills His promises to the faithful (Acts 12:2-4a)

 

C.    The message that has always been proclaimed to the lost did not originate with man.  The message was given by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4).

 

D.    “Other tongues” were given to the apostles so that all men could hear the message from God (Acts 2:4).

 

E.    “Devout men” often make good candidates to hear the gospel (Acts 2:5).

1.     Devout

a.     Strong (2126):  taking well (carefully), that is circumspect (religiously, pious)

b.     Thayer: taking hold well, carefully and surely, cautiously, reverencing God, pious, religious

2.     If devout men can be persuaded with truth, they will be just as cautious, pious, and referent toward the truth.

3.     Example:  Saul of Tarsus

 

F.     That day men were confounded and amazed, and, they marveled because of the miracle from heaven.  Man are still confounded, amazed, and marvel at the truth (Acts 2:6-7).

1.     Confounded

a.     Strong (4797):  to throw into disorder, to perplex (the mind)

b.     Thayer:  to disturb the mind of one…to confound, bewilder

2.     Amazed

a.     Strong (1839):  to put (stand) out of wits, that is astound

b.     Thayer:  to amaze, to astonish, throw into wonderment

3.     Marvelled

a.     Strong (2296):  to wonder

b.     Thayer:  to wonder…marvel

 

G.    People throughout the world need to hear the gospel (Acts 2:9-11)

1.     Seventeen different groups are mentioned in this list.

2.     Matthew 28:19

 

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…

 

H.    The message that Christians speak involve “the wonderful works of God” (Acts 2:11).

 

…we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

 

I.      One of the reactions that some will have to the message will be doubt (Acts 2:12).

1.     Doubt

a.     Strong (1280):  to be thoroughly nonplussed (astonished, baffled, bewildered, dumbfounded)

b.     Thayer:  to be entirely at a loss, to be in perplexity

c.     The women at Jesus’ tomb (Luke 24:1-4).

 

…And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
