DAVID DECEIVES ACHISH, KING OF GATH

I Samuel 27:1-12

Victor M. Eskew

1.      Outline:

i.                    DAVID AVOIDS SAUL (I Sam. 27:1-4)

ii.                  DAVID ATTAINS ZIGLAG (I Sam. 27:5-7)

iii.                DAVID  ATTACKS ENEMIES (I Sam. 27:8-12)

2.      What did David believe in his heart about Saul? (I Sam. 27:1)

And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul…

A.    He believed that he would perish at the hand of Saul.  The very fact that Saul had pursued him after he spared his life the first time probably confirmed this to David.

B.      In the course of Saul’s pursuit David had been fortunate on several occasions.

1.      He evaded the javelin twice

2.      He escaped from his house with Michal’s help

3.      He fled from Saul with the help of Jonathan

4.      The invasion of the Philistines kept him from getting caught on one occasion.

C.     David was thinking in human terms.  Eventually, the odds would be against him.

D.    Question:  Was David’s faith in God wavering somewhat?

1.      God had been with David and preserved him to this point.

2.      What was it that caused David to quit trusting in God’s deliverance at this time?

3.      What plan did David devise? (I Sam. 27:1)

…there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines…

A.    He thought he should escape into the land of the Philistines.

B.      Remember, this is still an enemy nation to the Jews.

4.      If David went into the land of the Philistines, what did he believe Saul would do? (I Sam. 27:1)

…and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel:  so shall I escape out of his hand.

A.    He believed Saul would “despair” of him and would no longer seek his life.

B.      Despair:

1.      Strong (2976):  to despond    :- be no hope

2.      BDB:  to be despaired, it is hopeless!

5.      How many men went with David into the land of the Philistines? (I Sam. 27:2)

And David arose, and he passed over with six hundred men that were with him…

A.    600 men

6.      To which king did David go in the land of the Philistines? (I Sam. 27:2)

…that were with him to Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

A.    Achish, king of Gath

7.      T – F    David’s wives did not dwell with David in Gath. (I Sam. 27:3)

And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.

A.    False

B.      This was an extremely large group of people.

1.      David and his six hundred men

2.      David’s two wives

3.      The households of all of his men.

8.      T – F    When Saul learned David was in Gath, he and his army sought after David (I Sam. 27:4).

And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath:  and he sought no more again for him.

A.    False

B.      David’s plan was successful regarding Saul.  He no longer thought it was worth his time to pursue David.  David was now a free man, but he did not know this.

9.      What did David want Achish to give him? (I Sam. 27:5)

And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there…

A.    A town in the country

10.  What was David’s reason for wanting this town? (I Sam. 27:5)

…for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

A.    David did not think it was good for him to dwell in the royal city of the king.

B.      There may have been several reasons for this.

1.      David was a foreigner, not a citizen.

2.      In the city, the eyes of the Philistines would be upon him.

3.      In the country, he could better conceal any action that he was taking.

11.  What town was given to David? (I Sam. 27:6)

Than Achish gave him Ziklag that day…

A.    Ziklag

B.      Ziklag originally belonged to Judah (Judg. 15:31).  It, then, passed into the hands of Simeon (Josh. 19:5).

C.     At this time, it had been overtaken and was occupied by the Philistines.

D.    The exact location is not really known.  There have been four different locations suggested.

12.  T – F    When the book of I Samuel was written, Ziklag still belonged to the kings of Judah.

(I Sam. 27:6).

…wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Juda unto this day.

A.    True

13.  When David received Ziklag, how long had he been in Philistine territory? (I Sam. 27:7)

And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

A.    A year and four months, or, sixteen months

14.  What three nations did David and his men invade? (I Sam. 27:8)

And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites…

A.    Geshurites:  aboriginal people who inhabited the south-west border of Palestine

B.      Gezrites:  may have been connected to Mount Gerizim

C.     Amalekites:  a nomadic tribe of uncertain origin, which occupied the peninsula of Sinai and the wilderness intervening between the southern hill-ranges of Palestine and the border of Egypt.

15.  “for these nations were of old inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt” (I Sam. 27:8).

16.  When David smote these nations, who did he kill? (I Sam. 27:9)

And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive…

A.    He killed all of the men and all of the women

17.  What did he take from them? (I Sam. 27:9)

…and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

A.    Sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and apparel

18.  What question would Achish often ask David? (I Sam. 27:10)

And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road today?

A.    Whither have ye made a road today?

B.      Where have you made an invasion today?

19.  What three places did David tell Achish he had fought against? (I Sam. 27:10)

…And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

A.    The south of Judah

B.      Jerahmeelites:  the descendants of Jerahmeel, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah (I Chron. 2:9; Num. 26:20-21)

C.     The south of the Kenites:  the Kenites had shown kindness to Israel when they came up out of the land of Egypt (I Sam. 15:6).

And Saul said unto he Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them:  for ye showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt…

20.  Why Did David refuse to save neither man nor woman alive? (I Sam. 27:11)

And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, lest they should tell on us, saying…

A.    He did not want Achish and the Philistines to know what he was really doing.

21.  How long might it be said that David would go against the enemy nations? (I Sam. 27:11)

…So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

A.    As long as he dwelled in the country of the Philisintes

22.  T – F    Achish believed the lies that David told him. (I Sam. 27:12)

And Achish believed David…

A.    True

B.      Lesson:  It is very easy for individuals to believe false information.  To trust information, it really needs to be verified.

23.  Because Achish believed David’s lies, what two things did he also think? (I Sam. 27:12)

…saying, He hath made his people Israel to utterly abhor him:  therefore he shall be my servant forever.

A.    He hath made his people to utterly abhor him.

B.      Therefore he shall be my servant forever.
