JAMES 1:14

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

 

 

1.    Tempted

A.   Strong (3985):  to test, scrutinize, entice, discipline

B.    Thayer:  to try, make trial of…in a bad sense, to test one maliciously, craftily to put to the proof his feelings or judgments

C.   Vine:  of temptations to sin…James refers to temptation or trial, arising from within, from uncontrolled appetites and from evil passions

 

2.    Drawn away

A.   Strong (1828):  to drag forth…to entice (to sin)

B.    Thayer:  to draw out, metaphorically lure forth:  in hunting and fishing as game is lured from its hiding place, so man by lure is allured from the safety of self-re-straint to sin

C.   Vine:  to draw away, or lure forth

 

3.    Lust

A.   Strong (1939):  long (esp. for what is forbidden)

B.    Thayer:  desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust

C.   Vine:  denotes a strong desire of any kind…Such lusts are not necessarily base and immoral, they may be refined in character, but are evil if inconsistent with the will of God

 

4.    Enticed

A.   Strong (1185):  to entrap, that is, (figuratively) delude, also translated as “allure”

B.    Thayer:  to bait, catch by bait, metaphorically to beguile by blandishments, allure, entice, deceive

C.   Vine:  to lure by bait…is used metaphorically in James 1:14, of enticement of lust
