Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by which ye are called?

 

1.    Blaspheme

A.   Strong (987):  to vilify, specifically to speak impiously

B.    Thayer:  to speak reproachfully, rail at, revile, calumniate

C.   Vine:  rail at or revile…the root word literally means injurious speech

 

2.    Worthy

A.   Strong (2570):  properly beautiful, but chiefly (figuratively) good (literally or morally), that is, valuable or virtuous

B.    Thayer:  beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, surpassing, precious, useful, suitable, commendable, admirable…beautiful by reason of purity of heart and life, hence praiseworthy

C.   Vine:  denotes that which is intrinsically good, and so, goodly, fair beautiful

 

3.    Name

A.   Strong (3686):  a name (literally or figuratively) (authority, character)

B.    Thayer:  name…the name, i.e., for one’s rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellencies, deeds

C.   Vine:  for all that a name implies of authority, character, rank, majesty, power, excellence, etc.

 

4.    Called

A.   Strong (1941):  entitle

B.    Thayer:  to put a name upon…to be named after someone

C.   Vine:  to be called by a person’s name, hence it is used of being declared to be dedicated to a person, as to the Lord
