Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Thought: In the past, God's power created a marvelous new world. Today, this same power can create a new year for you.
Philippians 3:13-14
January 2, 2013
Genesis 1:3 - And God said, Let there be light and there was light.
Thought: When God speaks, positive things happen. Let God's word speak to your life and watch the positive results that happen.
II Timothy 3:16-17
January 3, 2013
Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Thought: We are created in the image of God. What a wonderful, uplifting thought. This one thought should boost every man's self-esteem.
II Corinthians 3:18
January 4, 2013
Genesis 1:31 - And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Thought: The things God creates are very good. If we allow Him to create in us a pure heart and holy life, it, too, will be very good.
Psalm 51:10
January 5, 2013
Genesis 2:2 - And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Thought: Even God needed a day of rest after His six days of labor. In our hectic and strenuous weekly schedules, we need to find at least one day to rest.
Mark 6:31
January 6, 2013
Genesis 2:7 - And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Thought: Here we see the Heavenly Potter in action, forming man from the dust of the earth. We also see the Giver of life breathing animation into his shapely work. Each human being is a unique masterpiece from the hand of God.
Acts 17:25, 28
January 7, 2013
Genesis 2:8 - And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Thought: God took care of man's basic needs. He did not create him and leave him destitute. God will not forsake his children today. He will provide food and clothing. All else are non-essentials.
Matthew 6:31-33
January 8, 2013
Genesis 2:15 - And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden to dress it and to keep it.
Thought: Work for some is a "four-letter" word. God has ordained work. It is a necessary part of a fruitful and happy life. Give God thanks for your occupation.
II Thessalonians 3:10
January 9, 2013
Genesis 2:16-17 - And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Thought: Choices. They present themselves to us every day. They enable us to exercise our freewill. The decisions we make tell God, Satan, and the world whose side we are on.
Joshua 24:15
January 10, 2013
Genesis 2:18 - And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an helpmeet for him.
Thought: The first man needed a helpmeet. He needed someone to walk with him, to support him, to comfort him, to love him, to share feelings with him. If you have such a person, thank God for her. If you do not, pray that God will send her to you.
Proverbs 31:10-12
January 11, 2013
Genesis 2:21-22 - And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Thought: God is the giver of precious gifts. He had already given Adam the gift of life. Now He brings man a helpmeet for him. God has given us many things. Take a moment to list some of them. Then, give thanks.
James 1:17
January 12, 2013
Genesis 2:24 - Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh.
Thought: Life is a continual series of transitions. Here we read of the child leaving his parents and cleaving to his mate. Some transitions are easy; others are more difficult. Walk through them slowly with faith anchored to the hope which lies beyond the veil.
Hebrews 6:19
January 13, 2013
Genesis 2:25 - And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Thought: Adam and Eve were both naked, and were not ashamed. This was when the world was in a period of innocence. Man's eyes had not yet been opened to the evils of sin. Today man's eyes are open. However, humanity continues to parade in nakedness and is not ashamed.
Jeremiah 6:15
January 14, 2013
Genesis 3:1 - Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Thought: Satan is a crafty fellow. He will even allow you the time to think about God's commandments before tempting you. He knows it all boils down to a choice, your will or God's. This is where denying self, and bearing a cross comes into play.
Luke 9:23
January 15, 2013
Genesis 3:4-5 - And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Thought: What Satan said would not happen has happened. Man dies both physically and spiritually. Satan is a liar. He can change God's word simply by adding one word to those God has spoken. He can also remove words from God's Word. Beware of the deceiver.
John 8:44
January 16, 2013
Genesis 3:6 - And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Thought: The woman saw and desired Satan's temptation. It was extremely pleasant to the eyes. She thought it would bring great rewards. How much sin has presented itself to humanity as good, wholesome, and helpful? If it were presented otherwise, Satan could lure no one.
I John 2:15-17
January 17, 2013
Genesis 3:7 - And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Thought: Their eyes were now opened to the horrors of sin. Their eyes were now opened to shame and fear. Their eyes were now open to hiding and blaming. Sin opens the eyes. This day, flee from temptation, lest your eyes be opened also.
James 4:7
January 18, 2013
Genesis 3:8 - And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Thought: The first couple sought to hide themselves from God. Where would they hide? in the bushes? behind the trees? in the valley? in a cave? There was no place of escape. The all-seeing eye was present. Where is your hiding spot? Remember: He's watching!
Psalm 139:7-12
January 19, 2013
Genesis 3:9 - And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Thought: God seeks the fellowship of His creation. He cries continually, asking, Where art thou?" Have you heard His tender pleading? Perhaps you have heard, but haven't responded. Could it be your sins are great, and you are scared to come out? Don't be afraid. Rest now awaits.
Matthew 5:3-6
January 20, 2013
Genesis 3:10 - And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Thought: When Adam and Eve heard the voice of God within the garden, fear pierced their hearts. Some have known this fear. Others will come to know it when they hear the voice of the Lord at His return. Perfect love, however, casts out fear.
I John 4:16-18
January 21, 2013
Genesis 3:11 - And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the fruit, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Thought: God's question to Adam held him accountable. Man is a being who has the freedom to choose. Once the choice has been made, God then judges. A day is coming in which God will judge the world. At that time, every man will be held accountable for his re- sponse to God's will.
Romans 14:12
January 22, 2013
Genesis 3:12-13 - And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Thought: Adam blamed God for his sin. Eve turned to the serpent for her excuse. Mankind continues to follow in their footsteps. Mental illness, law and order, discipline, parents, genetics, and a host of other things are blamed for wrong actions and uncontrolled emotions. Who are you blaming?
II Corinthians 13:5
January 23, 2013
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between they seed and her seed, it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Thought: Gloom had fallen upon humanity. Sin had made its way into the world. It appeared that Satan had won. Such was not on God's mind. He foretold of day when a crushing blow would strike the serpent's head. Victory was coming. His Son would destroy him that hath the power of death.
Hebrews 2:14
January 24, 2013
Genesis 3:19 - In the sweat of thy face shalth thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Thought: Sin must be punished. Thus, Adam and Eve had to face the consequences of their sins. In fact, all men suffer the consequences of the first couple's sin. Funeral homes and cemeteries are a constant reminder that all men are but dust and will return thereunto.
Romans 5:12
January 25, 2013
Genesis 3:23-24 - Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Thought: God separated man from the tree of life. It was a tree that would allow him to live forever. Apparently, the tree remainded on the eartth till the flood. Now it awaits the faithful in the splendors of heaven. What an incentive to live as God directs.
Revelation 22:2
January 26, 2013
Genesis 4:1 - And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
Thought: Children are a gift from God. They are not just part of a mother's body to be destroyed. They are not one's property to be abused. They are not pawns and servants to be used for another's glory. They are gifts. As such, they are to be loved, nurtured, and reared to the glory of God.
Psalm 127:3-6
January 27, 2013
Genesis 4:7 - If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Thought: The words of this test were spoken to Cain. His offering from the fruit of the ground was unacceptable to the Lord. Abel's offering, on the other hand, had been offered by faith, and was pleasing to God. God still desires our sacrifices. Today He demands that our bodies be offered as a living sacrifice. Are you doing this well? Is your offering pleasing in the sight of God?
Romans 12:1-2
January 28, 2013
Genesis 4:9 - And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
Thought: Am I my brother's keeper? This is the age-old question. In the New Testament it was asked as, "Who is my neighbor?" Genuine care and concern for others is the responsibility. It requires our precious time, our emotional energy, and our valuable financial resources. Many will not invest any of these. Those who do are true neighbors. They gain the most precious commodity of all, the friendship and love of another human being.
I John 3:11-18
January 29, 2013
Genesis 4:10 - And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
Thought: Secret sins are those sins about which only we know. They are kept back from family and friends. They are done in dark and secret places. We think no one knows of these transgressions, but at least one individual knows. "And he said, What hast thou done?"
Ecclesiastes 12:14
January 30, 2013
Genesis 4:13 - And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Thought: Punishment was never intended to be a good thing. It should be severe enough to stress the severity of the crime committed. If such is accomplished, lessons will be learned. Too, some will contemplate the full course of their actions before they are taken.
Romans 2:8-9
January 31, 2013
Genesis 4:25-26 - And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
Thought: God's hand is in it all. The faithful Cain had been slain. An evil son remained. What did the future hold? The answer was a third son named Seth. God raised him up instead of Abel. The righteous line continued. What should man's response be to God's providential actions? They should call upon the name of the Lord.
Romans 10:13-17
