JESUS CHRIST:  THE VICTORIOUS KING

INTRODUCTION

 

A.  What comes to mind when you hear the word “war”?

1.    Opposing forces,  opposing nations, enemies

2.    Weapons, bombs, devastation

3.    Skirmishes, fights, battles

4.    Blood, pain, death

5.    Defeat and victory

 

B.   We are happy when we both personally and as a nation are not at war with others.

 

C.  What all of us must come to understand is that spiritually every man and woman is engaged in a war (Eph. 6:10-12).

 

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

 

D.  The end of our spiritual warfare will either be victory or defeat.

1.    If our loyalties are with the arch enemy Satan, our end will be defeat.

2.    If our allegiance is to Jesus Christ, we will be victorious.  Why?  Because Jesus Christ is a victorious King.

 

I.              PASSAGES PRCLAIMING CHRIST TO BE VICTORIOUS

 

A.  Genesis 3:15

 

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

 

B.   Psalm 2:7-9

 

I will declare the decree:  the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.  Ask of me, and I will give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for they possession.  Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

 

C.  John 12:31

 

Now is the judgment of this world:  now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

 

 

 

 

D.  II Timothy 1:10

 

But is now manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

 

E.   Hebrews 2:14

 

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.

 

II.            CHRIST’S VICTORIES OVER SATAN

 

A.  At the birth of our Lord, Satan was on the prowl for this child King.  He made an attempt on His life using his servant Herod

1.    Matt. 2:16

 

Then Herod when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

 

2.    Jesus was victorious over Satan and escaped into the land of Egypt (Matt. 2:12-15).

 

B.   After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, He was immediately taken into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 

1.    Satan used all of the avenues of temptation upon our Lord:  the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

2.    The Lord, however, prevailed over the evil one (Luke 4:13).

 

And when the devil had ended all temptation, he departed from him for a season.

 

C.  During our Lord’s ministry, He encountered numerous ones who were demon possessed.  Every time He was victorious over them (Mark 5:12-13).

 

And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.  And forthwith Jesus gave them leave.  And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand,) and were choked in the sea.

 

D.  At the crucifixion, Satan was in the mix.

1.    He entered into Judas’ heart to betray the precious Savior (John 13:2, 27; Luke 22:3).

 

Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

 

2.    Satan won the skirmish that night, but he did not win the war.  On the third day, Jesus came forth victorious over the grave and over Satan himself.

a.   Matthew 28:5-6

 

And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye:  for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  He is not here:  for he is risen, as he said.  Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

 

b.   Romans 1:4

 

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

 

III.          CHRIST GIVES VICTORY TO HIS CHRUCH

 

A.  The church is the body of Christ (Eph. 1:22-23).  To attack it is to attack Jesus Christ (Acts 9:1-2, 4).

 

B.   Satan attacks the church in many ways, but Jesus provides the church with the means of victory.

1.    Satan attacks us with sin.  We are ultimately victorious through the blood of Jesus Christ (I John 1:7).

 

But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

 

2.    Satan attacks humanity with false doctrine that can damn the souls of those who believe the lies.  Jesus has provided us with truth that can make us free (Rom. 8:2).

 

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath set me free from the law of sin and death.

 

3.    Satan attacks the church through pain and suffering.  Christ takes that pain and anguish and helps us to develop our character and produce fruit in our lives (Heb. 12:11).

 

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:  nevertheless, afterward it yeildeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

 

4.    Satan attacks us with our own selves.  Christ enables us to overcome by allowing us to put Him on instead (Rom. 13:14).

 

But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

 

5.    Satan attacks us through doubt.  Christ enable us to be victorious through faith (Eph. 6:16).

 

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

 

6.    Satan attacks man through death.  Christ defeats death by means of the resurrection from the dead (I Cor. 15:25-26).

 

For he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet.  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

 

IV.          CHRIST’S ULTIMATE VICTORY

 

A.  When Jesus returns, all the dead will be resurrected (John 5:28-29).

 

Marvel not at this:  for the hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth…

 

B.   At His coming, every eye shall see Him (Rev. 1:7).

 

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and also they which pierced him:  and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.  Even so.  Amen.

 

C.  Every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Rom. 14:11-12).

 

For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.  So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

 

D.  This world that so many love and cherish and put their hope in will be destroyed (II Pet. 3:10).

 

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

 

E.   Men will be judged by the divine standard of truth by a perfect judge who knows all, even the hearts of men (Rom. 2:2).

 

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

 

F.   The righteous will be abundantly rewarded (Luke 6:23a).

 

Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy:  for, behold, your reward is great in heaven…

 

 

G.  The wicked will be punished in eternal condemnation in hell.

1.    Matthew 25:41

 

Then shall he say unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

 

2.    Satan and his angels will be condemned to hell (Rev. 20:10).

 

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever.

 

H.  Jesus will deliver all things back to the Father in heaven (I Cor. 15:24).

 

Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule, and all authority, and power.

 

CONCLUSION

 

A.  Jesus truly is a victorious King.

 

B.   In Revelation 19, we see Him presented in all of His glory and splendor as the rider on the white horse (See Rev. 19:15-16).

 

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he shall smite the nations; and he shall rule them a rod of iron:  and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

 

C.  Question:  Don’t you want to be on the side of the victorious King?
